Food From Scratch

How to make Bone Broth in the Instant Pot

Hello, welcome! Thank you so much for being here.

Today I’m sharing the easy way of making bone broth in the Instant Pot.

Soups are staples, especially during these colder months. They are an easy way to fortify your family with essential nutrients and beneficial ingredients. One of the most important – maybe even the most necessary – ingredients for soup is broth.

(And since you know that I am on the journey of making more food from scratch, bone broth was a non-negotiable.)

As you continue your from-scratch kitchen journey, homemade bone broth is one step I highly recommend you take. If you’re not quite sure where to start when it comes to making more food from scratch, bone broth could be your first step! If this seems a little overwhelming to you, take a visit to my easy honey wheat sandwich bread recipe. It is a great first step for from-scratch eating as well.

If you’ve already begun your cooking from-scratch journey, but aren’t quite ready to add another step into your routine. That’s okay. The whole point of achieving your goal of cooking from scratch is to move on to the small steps when you’re ready. Feeling overwhelmed by adding too much to your plate at once will significantly decrease you likelihood of achieving a from-scratch kitchen. Just Pin this recipe for later!

Common Questions

Where do I get the bones from?

After I’ve roasted a whole chicken in the oven, I’ll save the bones in a gallon ziplock freezer bag. I’ll also save the bones from any packages of bone-in pieces of meat (drumsticks, thighs, roasts, etc.). You could also contact a local butcher to purchase any bones they have.

Why homemade bone broth?

When comparing store bought bone broth to homemade bone broth, it just doesn’t measure up. You can immediately tell the difference once you’ve made your first pot of homemade bone broth. More beneficial ingredients are available to you within your homemade bone broth than the bone broth you buy from the store.

Why apple cider vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar will help with the break down of the bones and releasing of those nutrients from the bones as they process in your InstaPot.

How to make Bone Broth in the InstaPot

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 9 hours total (minimum)

Tools you may need

Instant Pot

Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients list

Bones

Water

2-3 TBSP apple cider vinegar

Vegetable scraps (optional)*

*I like to keep a freezer bag of vegetable scraps that I’ll add to the bone broth to enhance its flavor. The scraps are what’s left over after I’ve prepared a meal. They may be onion skins and ends, leek bottoms, celery leaves, and small garlic cloves.

Directions

1. Fill Instant Pot 3/4 of the way full with bones and vegetable scraps.

2. Pour water and apple cider vinegar into Instant Pot until it covers the bones and vegetable craps.

3. Press the soup button on more for 3 hours.

4. Repeat step three two more times for a total of three times.

5. Drain off the bones and vegetable scraps and store in the fridge for up to one week.

Plan of Action

When I’ve planned making a soup during the week, I’ll try to cook the bone broth required for it the day before I’m making the soup. That way, I’ll have enough time for this process. I have also begun the process very early the morning of the day I’m serving the soup. Pick what works best for you!

Thank you so much for your time!
